Split Voice Memos and Voice Notes

A forty-minute voice note from WhatsApp, a lecture in Voice Memos, a Telegram voice message that never ends: split it into parts of a length you choose, on the phone it came in on. Voice notes are Opus or M4A files, and ChunkAudio cuts both by copying, so there is no length limit and the parts join without a gap. No upload, no signup, no file size limit.

Split a voice note

The button opens the splitter; the steps below show how to get the file out of WhatsApp, Telegram or Voice Memos first. For a transcription service's limit: split audio for transcription.

A voice note in parts, in 3 steps

The only new step is getting the file out of the messenger. The rest is a split like any other.

1

Get the file out of the app

WhatsApp: Export chat with media gives one .opus file per voice note, or share a single message to Files or Drive. Telegram Desktop: Save as, an .ogg file. Voice Memos and Android recorders: share the recording and save it to Files, an .m4a.

2

Choose the part length

Five minutes, twenty, whatever the job needs. Smart split moves each cut to the nearest pause, so a part never ends in the middle of a sentence; Quick split cuts at the exact time.

3

Download the parts

Each part plays in the browser first. Free downloads are WAV, which every app opens but which is large, about 6 MB per minute. With Pro the parts stay Opus or M4A, a few hundred kilobytes per minute, unchanged from the original.

Why voice notes are a job of their own

Long, tiny, recorded on a phone, and personal.

Long, but tiny

A forty-minute WhatsApp voice note is about 7 MB; as WAV it would be 230 MB. ChunkAudio copies the Opus pages instead of decoding them, so a phone handles a two-hour note as easily as a two-minute one, and Pro keeps that size in the parts.

Cut on the phone it came in on

Nothing is decoded as a whole, so there is no memory limit, and the app runs in the phone's browser. Added to the home screen, it works offline.

Private by nature

A voice note is someone talking to you. It never leaves your device: ChunkAudio runs in the browser and sends nothing to a server.

Opus, M4A, and the seam between two parts

WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes are Opus audio in an Ogg container; Voice Memos, Signal and most Android recorders write M4A. ChunkAudio cuts both by copying whole pages or samples, which keeps the original quality and the original size and means a long file is no harder than a short one. For Opus, each part starts one page early and the player is told to skip exactly that page, so the parts play back without a click or a missing syllable at the seam. Smart split listens around each planned cut for a pause and moves the cut there.

Cutting one section out of a voice note and removing its pauses work too; those two decode the file first, which is fine for anything up to an hour or two.

What people split voice notes for

The recordings that arrive here from phones.

Long voice notes from friends and family

Forty minutes of news from abroad in four parts you can answer one by one, or the two minutes with the address, saved on their own.

Lectures and meetings in Voice Memos

A ninety-minute recording into fifteen-minute parts that fit a transcription upload or a study session. See the M4A splitter.

Interviews and dictation

Field interviews recorded on the phone, split into questions; dictation in parts a typist takes in turns. See split audio for transcription.

Language practice

Voice notes from a tandem partner cut into short pieces to replay and repeat, one sentence at a time.

Journalists and researchers

Voice messages from sources and participants, split by topic and filed, with nothing uploaded anywhere along the way.

Teams and customer service

Voice messages from customers cut into the parts that matter and attached to the ticket, or a whole day of them in one go.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a WhatsApp voice note as a file?

Open the chat, tap the name at the top and choose Export chat with media: the voice notes arrive as .opus files, one per message, named by date. For a single message, long-press it, choose Share or Forward and save it to Files, Drive or an email to yourself. On Android the files also sit in the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder under Android/media/com.whatsapp. Older notes may be M4A instead of Opus; both work.

And a Telegram voice message?

In Telegram Desktop, right-click the voice message and choose Save as: an .ogg file. On the phone, forward it to your Saved Messages and save it from the desktop app, or use Export chat history with voice messages included. Audio files sent through Telegram as files are MP3 or M4A already and work as they are.

Can I split an iPhone Voice Memo?

Yes. Share the memo from the Voice Memos app and save it to Files, then open it here. Voice Memos are M4A and are cut by copying, at any length. The Voice Memos app itself can trim the ends of a recording but not divide it into parts.

Does this work on the phone, without a computer?

Yes. Open chunkaudio.com in the phone's browser, choose the file from Files or the Downloads folder, split, and download the parts. Voice notes are copied rather than decoded, so a two-hour note needs no more memory than a short one. Added to the home screen, the app also works offline.

Is the voice note uploaded?

No. ChunkAudio runs in your browser; the file is read and cut on your device and nothing goes to a server. Closing the tab clears it from memory.

Will a part end in the middle of a word?

Not with Smart split: it looks around each planned cut for a pause and moves the cut there; half a second of silence is enough. With Quick split the cut sits at the exact time. Either way the parts join without a gap. Opus parts carry a short run-in that the player skips, so the first word of a part is complete.

What do I get back, and how big is it?

Each part as WAV for free, which plays everywhere but is about 6 MB per minute of mono voice. With Pro the parts stay in the original format, Opus in Ogg or M4A, at the original size, a few hundred kilobytes per minute, with nothing re-encoded.

Which formats are voice notes?

WhatsApp and Telegram use Opus in Ogg (.opus, .ogg). Voice Memos, Signal and most Android recorders use M4A (AAC); some recorders write 3GP with AAC inside, which works too. AMR, the old phone-call codec, is the exception: browsers cannot decode it, so convert such a file to M4A or MP3 first. When a file cannot be opened, ChunkAudio names the format it found.

Can I split several voice notes in one go?

Yes. Drop them together and they line up, split with the same length one after the other, and come back grouped by file. The first file is free, the rest of the list is a Pro feature.
