How to extract the audio from a video in 3 steps

Three steps. Seconds, not minutes. Nothing installed.

1

Open the video

MP4, MOV, M4V or 3GP, from your computer or your phone's photos. It stays on your device.

2

The sound comes out

ChunkAudio copies the sound track out of the video at once. A one-hour recording takes a few seconds.

3

Download M4A or WAV

M4A keeps the original sound and size, WAV is lossless and opens in every editor. Both are free.

The sound track, exactly as it was

Built for one job, done properly.

The original sound, untouched

The audio frames are copied out of the MP4 or MOV byte for byte. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, so nothing is lost.

Any length

A three-hour lecture or a 10 GB screen recording: only the sound track is read, so the size of the video does not matter.

Nothing is uploaded

The video stays on your device. The audio file is made in your browser and saved straight to your disk.

Works on your phone

Pick the video from your photos on iPhone or Android and save the sound as a file you can send or transcribe.

Cut and split right after

Keep only the part you need, split a long recording into parts, shorten the pauses or check the loudness, in the same app.

Free, MP3 included

M4A and WAV are free with no limits and no watermark, MP3 for videos up to 15 minutes. Pro adds MP3 for longer videos and removes ads.

What people take the sound from

Videos where the audio is what matters.

Zoom and Teams recordings

Take the sound out of a meeting video to transcribe it or listen on the go.

Turn a recorded class into an audio file for revision, at a fraction of the size.

Screen recordings and tutorials

Keep the voice-over of an OBS or QuickTime recording as its own file.

Phone videos

A voice message, a speech or a concert filmed on your phone, saved as audio.

Interviews filmed on camera

The sound track for the transcriber or the podcast edit, without the video.

Your own music videos

The audio of a performance you filmed, for practising or sharing.

Frequently asked questions

Which videos work?

MP4, MOV, M4V and 3GP videos with AAC or Apple Lossless sound, which covers phone videos, screen recordings, Zoom, Teams and OBS recordings and most downloads. Their sound track is copied out untouched. WebM videos are decoded in the browser instead and come out as WAV.

Is it free?

Yes. Extracting the audio and downloading it as M4A or WAV is free, with no limit on length and no watermark. MP3 is free for videos up to 15 minutes; for longer ones it comes with ChunkAudio Pro (a 7-day pass for €4.99, a yearly plan or a lifetime licence), which also removes ads.

Does the sound quality change?

No. For MP4 and MOV the audio frames are copied byte for byte into an M4A file, without decoding or re-encoding, so the sound is exactly what the video carried. The WAV download is the same audio decoded, lossless.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read on your own device, inside your browser, and the audio file is written there too. Nothing is sent to a server, so a private recording stays private.

How long can the video be?

For MP4 and MOV there is no length limit: a three-hour lecture or a 10 GB screen recording works, because only the audio frames are read and copied. WebM videos are decoded first, which works up to roughly two hours on a laptop and less on a phone.

Can I get an MP3?

Yes. For videos up to 15 minutes the result has a free Download as MP3 button, at 192 or 320 kbps; longer videos get MP3 with Pro. The free M4A plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac and transcription services accept it, so for long recordings most people do not need the MP3. More on the MP4 to MP3 converter.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. On iPhone and Android, tap Open the extractor, choose the video from your photos or files, and save the audio. Because nothing is uploaded, it also works on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Can I cut or split the audio afterwards?

Yes. The same app cuts a section, splits the audio into equal parts, shortens long pauses and measures the loudness, all on the file you already opened.
