How to trim audio online in 3 steps
Three steps. Under a minute. Nothing installed.
Drop the file
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC or OGG. Drag it onto the page or click to choose it. It stays on your device.
Set the start and the end
Drag the two handles on the waveform, type the times, or press "Trim silence" and the handles jump to the first and the last sound. Play to check.
Trim and download
Keep the section. Download as WAV, or in the original format with Pro.
What the trimmer does
Trimming means taking the start and the end off a recording and keeping what is between: the silence before someone speaks, the "is this on?" at the beginning of a meeting, the applause after a talk, the thirty seconds of a song you want as a ringtone. ChunkAudio's audio trimmer does it in your browser for MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC and OGG, so nothing is uploaded and a three-hour file is trimmed as fast as a jingle.
Set the two points by hand, or press "Trim silence" and the trimmer finds the first and the last sound for you. The trim is exact to the sample for WAV and M4A and to the frame for MP3, and with Pro the result is the original data copied, so an MP3 stays the MP3 it was. To cut a piece out of the middle instead, use the same tool as the audio cutter; to get many equal parts, use the splitter; to shorten the pauses inside the recording, the pause remover.
An audio trimmer that does the job properly
Built for one job, done properly.
Both ends in one go
Keep only the section you chose, or remove it and join what is left into one file. Optionally save the parts before and after too.
Exact to the sample
Set start and end by dragging the handles or typing times like 1:30. The cut lands on the exact sample, not the nearest second.
Trim silence in one click
"Trim silence at both ends" finds where the sound starts and stops and sets the handles for you. Play the selection, adjust, cut.
Nothing is uploaded
The file is read and cut inside your browser. It never touches a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards.
Long files work
WAV files of any length are cut by copying bytes. MP3, M4A and AAC are cut on frame boundaries, at any length. FLAC and OGG are decoded first, up to roughly two hours on a computer.
MP3 export with Pro
Free downloads are lossless WAV. The optional Pro licence saves the cut as MP3 at 192 or 320 kbps and removes ads.
What people trim
The start of a recording
The fumbling before a lecture, interview or voice memo gets going.
The end of a recording
The goodbye, the chair noise and the minute of silence after the stop button was forgotten.
Ringtones
Thirty seconds of a song, exact to the sample, on the phone in a minute.
Clips for video
A quote or a music bed trimmed to the length of the shot.
Samples and loops
A hit, a phrase or a bar trimmed clean at both ends.
Audio for transcription
Silence trimmed off before paying per minute; pauses inside with the pause remover.
Frequently asked questions
How do I trim audio online for free?
Open the trimmer, drop the file on the page, drag the start handle and the end handle to where the audio should begin and end (or type the times), press play to check, then click Cut with "Keep this section". The trimmed file downloads as WAV for free; with Pro it stays MP3, M4A, AAC or FLAC. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.
Can it trim the silence at the start and end automatically?
Yes. The "Trim silence" button finds the first and the last sound in the file and moves both handles there. Check the result with play, nudge a handle if you want a little room, and cut.
Is trimming the same as cutting?
Trimming is cutting at both ends: you keep the middle and drop the lead-in and the tail. Cutting a piece out of the middle, or keeping only a middle section, is the same tool with the handles elsewhere. Splitting a long file into many parts is the splitter next to it.
Which formats can I trim?
MP3, WAV, M4A and AAC are trimmed by copying the original data, so there is no length limit and no quality loss. FLAC and OGG are decoded once in the browser, which works for files of up to a few hours on a computer.
Does trimming reduce the quality?
No. WAV and M4A are cut exact to the sample, MP3 to the nearest frame (about 26 milliseconds), and with Pro the output is the original data copied. The free WAV download is that section decoded once, with nothing re-compressed.
How long can the file be?
There is no limit for MP3, WAV, M4A and AAC: a seven-hour recording is trimmed in seconds because only the kept range is copied. On a phone, very large files depend on the device's memory.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The trimmer runs entirely in your browser. The file is read from your disk, trimmed on your device and saved back to your disk; the page makes no network request with audio in it.
Can I trim a song for a ringtone?
Yes. Type the start and the end time, for example 0:42 and 1:12 for a 30-second ringtone, check with play, cut, and download. The guide on custom ringtones shows the rest, including how to get it onto an iPhone.
