About this audio splitter

ChunkAudio takes one audio file and gives you back several: equal-length parts, a section you cut out, or the same recording with the long pauses shortened. Everything happens inside your browser. The file is read from your disk, processed on your own computer or phone, and the parts are saved back to your disk. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the site keeps no copy of anything you process.

Three modes

• Split into parts. Choose a length, for example 10 minutes, and get the recording as a series of equal parts. Smart split moves each cut to the nearest pause so that no word is chopped in the middle. This is what people use for transcription services with upload limits, for audiobooks, and for long meetings. • Cut a section. Drag two handles on the waveform, or type the start and end time, and keep or remove that stretch. Trim silence places the handles at the first and last sound for you. Guide: cutting audio online.
• Remove pauses. The app finds every silence longer than a limit you set and shortens it to a natural gap, then gives you one continuous file. Free for recordings up to 10 minutes. Guide: removing silence from a recording.

Formats and limits

Drop in MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, AAC or AIFF. WAV and MP3 files of any length work, even a seven-hour recording, because they are split by copying bytes and frames rather than decoding the audio. Free downloads are WAV for every source. Pro gives the parts back in the format they came in: MP3, M4A and AAC untouched (frame- or sample-exact, tags kept), FLAC bit-exact, plus MP3 at 192 or 320 kbps from anything. M4A, M4B, MP4 and MOV files of any length split by copying the audio samples. Smart split only decodes the seconds around each cut, and cutting and pause removal copy frames the same way, so every tool works at any length for these formats and the Pro result keeps the original format. Other formats (FLAC, OGG, AIFF) are decoded in your browser first, which works up to roughly two hours on a laptop and less on a phone; the parts are then saved as WAV.
