Does ChunkAudio open M4A files?
Yes. M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 container, and Chrome, Edge and Safari decode it natively on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Firefox uses the operating system’s codecs, so it works on Windows and macOS and may not on Linux. If a file will not open, try Chrome.
Can I split an iPhone Voice Memo?
Yes. Share the memo to Files or AirDrop it to your computer, then drop it onto ChunkAudio. Voice Memos are M4A, and long ones split cleanly into equal parts or at silences.
Why do I get WAV and not M4A back?
Browsers can decode AAC but none of them can encode it, so the parts are written as WAV, which is lossless and plays everywhere. With the Pro licence you can save MP3 instead. Any free converter turns WAV into M4A if you need that container.
Does the quality suffer?
No. The M4A is decoded once and each part is saved as WAV without any further compression. Pro’s MP3 export is one fresh encode at 192 or 320 kbps.
What about protected M4P files from the iTunes Store?
Those are DRM-protected and no browser can decode them. Apple Music downloads are also protected. Purchased iTunes Plus tracks and your own recordings are normal M4A and work.
How long can the M4A be?
M4A is decoded into your browser’s memory, which works well up to about three hours on most computers, less on older phones. Longer recordings: convert to WAV first, because WAV files of any length are split without decoding.
Is it free?
Splitting and cutting are free and unlimited, with no signup and no watermark. Pause removal is free up to 10 minutes. The optional Pro licence (€24 once) adds MP3 export, pause removal for longer recordings and removes ads.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, and closing the tab clears the audio from memory.
