ChunkAudio VS SnipSound

ChunkAudio vs SnipSound: two free in-browser audio splitters

Both run in your browser and upload nothing, which is why people search for one and find the other. They differ on how they split, what comes out, and how long a file can be. Compared from SnipSound's own documentation as of October 2026; we say where SnipSound is the better choice.

How we compared, and the one thing to understand first

ChunkAudio is our own tool, so we checked SnipSound against its published pages (splitter, trimmer, silence remover, help and FAQ) in October 2026 rather than claim a side-by-side test we could not run blind. If SnipSound changes, tell us and this page follows.

The difference that explains most rows in the table: SnipSound decodes the whole file into memory and re-encodes the parts you keep, the way an audio editor works. ChunkAudio never decodes the file for splitting; it reads the MP3 frames, the M4A samples or the WAV bytes and copies the ranges you asked for. That is why ChunkAudio has no length limit and keeps MP3 and M4A untouched, and why SnipSound can offer effects, markers and format conversion that a copy cannot.

When to use ChunkAudio

Long recordings

A three-hour lecture, a six-hour MP3, a 2 GB voice memo: ChunkAudio splits them in seconds without loading them into memory, on a phone too.

Use ChunkAudio

Parts that must sound exactly like the original

With Pro, MP3 and M4A parts are copies of the source frames and samples: nothing re-encoded, tags kept.

Use ChunkAudio

Equal parts for transcription limits

Ten-minute parts for a 25 MB API limit, each cut nudged to the nearest pause so no word is split, all parts in one ZIP.

Use ChunkAudio

Shortening pauses before publishing or paying per minute

Pause removal with a preview and a chosen remaining pause length, the file never re-encoded.

Use ChunkAudio

When to use SnipSound

SnipSound exports every common format for free at the bitrate you choose. ChunkAudio's free download is WAV.

Use SnipSound

Chapter splits at points you place by hand

Custom markers for a live recording or an album rip, several cuts in one pass.

Use SnipSound

Tempo, key, beats and music

BPM finder, key finder, a beat maker and a royalty-free music library sit next to the splitter.

Use SnipSound

Light editing of short files

Fades and effects in the audio editor, when the file is short enough to decode in one go.

Pros and cons

ChunkAudio

✓ Pros

  • No length limit: frames and samples are copied, nothing decoded
  • MP3, M4A, AAC and WAV parts identical to the source (Pro)
  • Smart split keeps the part length and moves cuts to pauses
  • Pause removal with preview
  • Installable, works offline
  • Nothing uploaded, no account

✗ Cons

  • Free output is WAV; original formats need the Pro licence
  • No hand-placed markers, one cut per pass in the cutter
  • No effects, no format conversion, no music tools
  • A small ad slot under the results for non-Pro users

SnipSound

✓ Pros

  • Free export to MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC and M4A
  • Custom markers for chapter-style splits
  • Many tools in one place: trimmer, editor, silence remover, BPM and key finder, beat maker
  • Royalty-free music library
  • Nothing uploaded, no account, no watermark, no ads

✗ Cons

  • The whole file is decoded first: long files are limited by device memory, especially on phones
  • Kept parts are re-encoded, one more generation of lossy compression for MP3, OGG and AAC
  • Silence split cuts at every silence rather than keeping a target part length
  • No stated offline mode

Verdict

Long recordings, untouched MP3 or M4A parts, pause removal: ChunkAudio. It copies instead of decoding, which is what those three jobs need.

Free MP3 or FLAC output, chapter markers, music tools: SnipSound. It is the better pick when the file is short and the format of the result matters more than its length or its fidelity.

Frequently asked questions

Is SnipSound the same as ChunkAudio?

No, but they share the main idea: both split audio inside the browser and upload nothing. SnipSound decodes the whole file and re-encodes the parts you keep, and offers many tools (trimmer, silence remover, BPM and key finder, beat maker, free music). ChunkAudio copies the original MP3, M4A, AAC and WAV data without decoding, so files of any length work and the parts keep the original quality; it adds pause removal and a smart split that keeps your part length.

Which one handles very long recordings?

ChunkAudio. It reads the file in windows and copies frames or samples, so a six-hour MP3 or a 2 GB M4A splits in seconds on a laptop or a phone. SnipSound states that its only limit is the memory of your device, which in practice means a few hours of compressed audio on a computer and far less on a phone, because the whole file is decoded first.

Which one is better for MP3 quality?

ChunkAudio with the Pro licence keeps the original MP3 frames, so the parts are bit-identical to the source. SnipSound re-encodes the parts you keep at a bitrate you choose, which is one extra generation of MP3 compression. For WAV output there is no difference, and ChunkAudio's free download is WAV.

Which one is free for MP3 export?

SnipSound exports MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and AAC for free. ChunkAudio's free downloads are WAV; keeping the original format (MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC) needs the one-time Pro licence of 24 euro. If free MP3 output matters more to you than untouched audio or file length, SnipSound is the better pick.

Is SnipSound a good alternative to ChunkAudio?

For short files and for jobs ChunkAudio does not do, yes: chapter splits at hand-placed markers, re-encoding to another format, finding a tempo or key, royalty-free music. For long recordings, frame-exact MP3 and M4A parts, and pause removal with a preview, ChunkAudio is the better tool.
