About this audio splitter

ChunkAudio takes one audio file and gives you back several: equal-length parts, a section you cut out, or the same recording with the long pauses shortened. Everything happens inside your browser. The file is read from your disk, processed on your own computer or phone, and the parts are saved back to your disk. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the site keeps no copy of anything you process.

Four tools

  • Split into parts. Choose a length, for example 10 minutes, and get the recording as a series of equal parts. Smart split moves each cut to the nearest pause so that no word is chopped in the middle. This is what people use for transcription services with upload limits, for audiobooks, and for long meetings. Guide: the right chunk size for transcription.
  • Cut a section. Drag two handles on the waveform, or type the start and end time, and keep or remove that stretch. Trim silence places the handles at the first and last sound for you. Guide: cutting audio online.
  • Remove pauses. The app finds every silence longer than a limit you set and shortens it to a natural gap, then gives you one continuous file. Free for recordings up to 10 minutes. Guide: removing silence from a recording.
  • Split channels. A stereo recording becomes one mono file per channel, left and right, each as long as the original. Useful when an interview or podcast was recorded with each microphone on its own channel, so each voice can be edited or transcribed on its own.

Formats and limits

Drop in MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, AAC or AIFF. WAV, MP3, M4A and Ogg (Opus) files of any length work, even a seven-hour recording, because they are split by copying bytes, frames, samples or pages rather than decoding the audio. Free downloads are WAV for every source. Pro gives the parts back in the format they came in: MP3, M4A, AAC and OGG untouched (frame- or sample-exact, tags kept), FLAC bit-exact, plus MP3 at 192 or 320 kbps from anything. M4A, M4B, MP4 and MOV files of any length split by copying the audio samples. Smart split only decodes the seconds around each cut, and cutting and pause removal copy frames the same way, so every tool works at any length for these formats and the Pro result keeps the original format. Other formats (FLAC, OGG, AIFF) are decoded in your browser first, which works up to roughly two hours on a laptop and less on a phone; the parts are then saved as WAV. The M4A page explains what that means for voice memos and Zoom recordings. There is no file size limit, since nothing is uploaded. A ZIP with recordings inside is unpacked in your browser as well: one file loads on its own, several become a batch. A video's sound track can be taken out as its own file: from MP4 and MOV as the untouched M4A, free and at any length. Guide: extracting audio from a video.

What you get

Each part can be previewed and downloaded on its own, or all parts together as one ZIP. Several files can be dropped together: each is split with the same settings and the parts come back grouped by file, with one ZIP for everything (the first file free, the whole list with Pro). The parts keep the original sample rate and channels; splitting adds no compression.

Loudness and chapter marks

Under the result sit two optional tools. Loudness measures each part in LUFS and true peak, the way podcast apps and streaming services do, free and on your device; with Pro it matches every part to -16 LUFS for podcasts, -14 for streaming and YouTube or -23 for broadcast. Guide: normalizing audio loudness. Chapter marks turns the cut points of a split into a list for YouTube descriptions or show notes, to copy or save as .txt for free, or as a CUE sheet or podcast chapters JSON with Pro. Guide: making chapter marks.

Free and Pro

Splitting, cutting, measuring loudness and pause removal on recordings up to 10 minutes are free, with WAV downloads. ChunkAudio Pro adds the original format out (or MP3 at 192 or 320 kbps), pause removal on longer recordings, loudness matching, batch splitting for the whole list, CUE and chapters JSON, and an ad-free site. It comes as a 7-day pass, a yearly plan or a lifetime licence, with no account.

Common uses

Preparing interviews and meetings for transcription, breaking an audiobook into chapters, cutting a podcast into clips, making ringtones, shortening a lecture recording, and cleaning up samples for voice work. The guides cover each of these with the settings that work.
